If I were to place you entirely into a poem was born from the desire to explore the relationship between writing and dancing. When bodies encounter words, space opens up to disrupt the supremacy of written language over things, the supremacy of names over the objects they’re assigned to. It becomes possible to explore other layers in these relations and in our understanding of them. The chasm between things and their names is where this book stands. A space to queer language, to twist the relation signifier-significator, to question the names of the things and recreate the things themselves.

Words choreograph our embodied realities. They can be the difference between feeling displaced or belonging to a place. The right pronoun has the power to make the world liveable, yet it also reveals the limits of gendered categories. Identity labels route resources towards marginalized groups, while also reducing their multiplicity.

The poems I share here reflect the challenge of fitting in—be it in society, in personal relationships, or even in relation to ourselves. As a queer person, assimilation is an ongoing question. In what contexts do I choose to conform—or not? When does it feel easy to be myself? When do I confront the system to claim the space that already belongs to me?

A waterfall flows down a mountainside, not minding the rocks beneath it, adapting to the ground without losing its strength. Yet, obstacles also carve a path of unexpected, unruly beauty. This is the path I am chasing in this writing process, which started as individual poetries and became the collective authoring of a performance.

If I were to place you entirely into a poem is where the two rivers of poetic writing and performance converge. It was born when my forgotten poems decided to flee from a drawer, and on their escape met two dancers. Together they started creating choreographies that then became videos—or, as I like to call them: moving poems. Those videos now meet this digital platform—what I call a book, even though you cannot turn its pages.

The challenge of this process was to work with both languages such that one did not efface the other; where bodies did not merely represent words; where words didn’t simply become ornaments for the body. These bodies—of flesh and language and movements and knowledge—are independent beings that can be experienced separately or in conjunction. Luckily, they often chose to relate.

In this process I was fortunate to have Ana Clara Montenegro and Elena Rose Light as artistic partners and with whom I share a love for words and for movement. They brought to this work not only their professional skills and powerful minds and bodies but also their experiences as queer people.

It is vulnerable to witness my never-before-seen poetries meet the world and be altered by the beautiful group of people involved in the creation of both this book and performance. It is both frightening and liberating to share the fragility and beauty of my own words. To find company in putting my language outside to dance a bit.

This dance of writing developed at the intersection of two countries, three nationalities, and two languages. The poems were originally written in Brazilian Portuguese, but since they were developed in Germany they had to be translated—into English, as it is more accessible to our diverse body of international readers. This translation process involved not only translating words but also realities. I’m grateful to Elena who stepped up to help me with editing and reviewing the English texts, and to César Nogueira for editing the original poems in Brazilian Portuguese.

This book arrives in the world online but accompanied by a live durational performance to celebrate its launching on November 19, 2022, at tête gallery in Berlin. I invite you to join us here and there, between the virtual and the real, between our bodies and yours, between what we call you and what you call us.

Se te colocasse inteira num poema nasceu do desejo de explorar a relação entre o ato de escrever e o ato de dançar. Confrontar palavra e corpo, desestabilizar a supremacia daquela sobre este, dos nomes sobre os objetos que designam, explorar outras camadas dessa relação e do nosso entendimento sobre ela. O abismo entre coisas e nomes é o território deste livro. Um espaço to queer the language, para deturpar a relação significado—significante, questionar os nomes das coisas, recriar as coisas dos nomes.

Palavras coreografam realidades. Elas podem criar a fronteira entre o sentir-se deslocado e o pertencer a um lugar. O pronome certo tem o dom de tornar o mundo habitável ou não. Também revela os limites das categorias de gênero. Grupos identitários abrem caminho para que pessoas marginalizadas sejam reconhecidas social, jurídica e politicamente. Ao mesmo tempo limitam a própria multiplicidade possível de identidades.

Os poemas que compartilho aqui traduzem a experiência de pessoas que vivem o movimento de desencaixar-se e encaixar-se. Na sociedade, nas relações pessoais e na relação consigo próprias. Para pessoas queer, a questão da assimilação é um jogo permanente. Em que contextos escolho me adaptar, em quais escolho não? Onde encontro espaço para ser-sem-medo? Onde confronto o sistema para defender o espaço que me pertence?

As águas de uma cachoeira descem montanha abaixo sem se importar com as pedras e buracos que encontra no terreno. E eis que os obstáculos esculpem um caminho de beleza inesperada e desregrada. E é este o caminho que eu procuro seguir nessa escrita que começou como poesias de uma pessoa e acabou por tornar-se escrita coletiva de uma performance.

Se te colocasse inteira num poema pode ser visto como o encontro de dois rios, a escrita poética e a cena. Ele nasceu quando algumas de minhas poesias esquecidas decidiram fugir de suas gavetas e, em sua fuga, encontraram dues dançarines. Juntes, iles criaram coreografias que se tornaram vídeos - ou, como eu gosto de chamá-los, poemas-movimentos. Estes vídeos agora encontram essa plataforma digital - que eu chamo livro, embora você não possa virar suas páginas.

A dificuldade criada por esse encontro era desenvolver o trabalho de maneira que uma linguagem não se sobrepusesse à outra, em que os corpos não fossem meras representações das palavras e as palavras não fossem apenas adornos para os corpos. Esses corpos - de carne e linguagem e movimento e conhecimento - são seres independentes, que podem ser vividos em suas individualidades ou em conjunção. Mas geralmente eles escolher se relacionar.

Nesse processo tive o prazer de ter como parceires artístiques Ana Clara Montenegro e Elena Rose Light, com quem compartilho o amor pelas palavras e pelos movimentos, e que trouxeram para o trabalho não apenas suas experiências profissionais e mentes afiadas, como suas vivências como seres humanos queer nesse mundão de meu deus.

Experiência pessoal única foi testemunhar minhas “até-então-nunca-lidas-poesias” saírem da gaveta e serem usadas profanamente pelas incríveis pessoas envolvidas tanto na criação desse site-livro quanto da performance. Foi ao mesmo tempo assustador e libertador ver aquilo que era segredo revelado ao mundo, compartilhar suas fragilidades e testar suas belezas. Encontrar companhia pra colocar meus poemas para dançar um pouco do lado de fora.

Essa dança de escritas se desenvolveu na encruzilhada de dois países, três nacionalidades e duas línguas. Os poemas foram escritos originalmente em português, mas como foram trabalhados na Alemanha, tiveram que ser traduzidos. Escolhi o inglês, para facilitar o diálogo com o grupo de leitores internacionais. Nesse processo de tradução não foram traduzidas apenas palavras, mas também realidades. Sou muito grata a Elena, que assumiu a edição e revisão das versões em inglês dos poemas e textos e a César Nogueira, responsável pela edição dos poemas originais em português.

O livro vem ao mundo online, mas em companhia de uma performance duracional ao vivo, que celebra seu lançamento no dia 19 de novembro de 2022 na tête gallery, em Berlim. This work is part of a project that started at the end of 2021. Throughout its life, it has had different forms, supporters, and collaborators.

The first part, titled Lines: when writing meets dancing was granted with the DIS-TANZ SOLO Scholarship, and included the participation of Ana Clara Montenegro, Elena Rose Light, and Simon Lenzen.

Then, with the support from Hessische Akademie and the city of Frankfurt am Main, I led a dance/theater piece titled The Name of the Piece, which premiered at Kunstler*innenhaus Mousonturm in June 2022. The team included: Ana Clara Montenegro, Elena Rose Light, Julia Mihály, Merthe Wulf, Jonathan Schmidt-Colinet and Martin Müller.

Finally, the book and accompanying performance titled If I were to place you entirely into a poem are supported by NPN - Nationales Performance Netz. Alice Nogueira (they/them) is the author of this book. Besides writing, they also work as a dramaturg and director for theater, dance, and performance. After graduating as a theater director at the University of Sao Paulo, Alice started a collective called Coletivo Cronopio and, together with their artistic partners, developed a working process that focuses on collaborative creation and in-process dramaturgical writing.

Alice is generally more interested in processes than outcomes.

They believe that working collectively is not only a form of doing micro-politics, but also a possibility for those who are involved to transform a part of themselves in the process. That’s why they are always searching for ways to die-hierarchize their creative processes.

Although their past works approach different themes, all of them share a peculiar way of seeing the world, an external gaze that reveals the uncanniness of everyday life. They try to challenge our understanding of norms, of how things should be done. This happens both in the most simple actions - such as a scene to learn how to drink a morning coffee in Instructions to make a theater piece - as well as in the more complex ones - as in a scene in The name of the piece where the performers write corporal and worldly Haikus for those who no longer exist. In this sense, Alice is always looking for ways to queer their perspective over life.

Alice has been living in Germany since 2018 and, ever since, has developed their work in a closer relation to dance and performance than to theater. This change of paths began when their relationship to words on stage started to wear out. They strongly wished that words could be read more as poetry than as statements, leaving space for the unknown, for the imagination. This book - and the performance that accompanies it - were birthed from this self-questioning and the desire to deal with language from a queer perspective.

Ana Clara Montenegro (she/her) is a dance artist and teacher.

She has been involved with dance and movement from an early age. She worked for a few years in dance companies in the cities of Belém and São Paulo (Brazil), but soon directed her work towards experimental dance and performance. She has been in Germany for the past 5 years, developing solo dance projects and collaborating in multi-disciplinary projects as a performer-creator and movement coach.

In her works, she deals with the internal space of the body (joints, body tissues, and sensations) in dialogue with the external space (of people, stories, myths, architecture). Her approach to movement is both artistic and therapeutic-political, since the process of working with the body happens in direct relation to one's social-historical context.

Ana did her master's degree in Choreography and Performance at the University of Gießen. Besides her artistic work, she teaches regular Vinyasa Yoga classes and workshops that approach Yoga as a tool for self-care and micro-political resistance.

elena rose light (they/them) is a choreographer, performer, and writer originally from Southern California (Micqanaqa’n). After studying French and art history at Yale, they moved to New York City and dove into the downtown dance scene. They went on to complete their MA in Choreography and Performance at the ATW Institute Giessen and are now living and working in Berlin, where they are currently developing a teaching and performance project around “trans practices.” At their core, they believe in the power of antiracist, queer, and non-binary somatics to reorganize systems of thought and social codes.

Alice Nogueira (ile/dile) é autore desse livro. Além de escrever, ile dirige e escreve para teatro, dança e performance. Após se formar em direção teatral pela Universidade de São Paulo, Alice formou o Coletivo Cronópio e, com os parceiros artísticos que encontrou nesse grupo, desenvolveu uma forma de trabalhar que explora a criação colaborativa e a escrita da dramaturgia em processo. Alice se interessa mais por processos do que por resultados.

Ile acredita que trabalhar em coletivo é não apenas uma forma de micro-política, como também uma possibilidade para que todos os seres envolvidos na criação possam se transformar ao longo do processo. Para tanto, em seus processos criativos Alice está sempre buscando formas de criação não-hierarquizadas.

Ainda que seus trabalhos variem em tema, é comum a todos eles uma forma peculiar de olhar o mundo, com um olhar distanciado e que revela o estranhamento da vida como ela é. Ile busca colocar em cheque o que é tido como regra e a forma como (nos dizem) as coisas devem ser feitas. Assim é desde as ações mais simples, como tomar um café com leite, até as mais complexas, como se definir como indivíduo. Nesse sentido, pode-se dizer que ile está sempre buscando formas queers de ver a vida.

Desde 2018 Alice vive na Alemanha, onde vem desenvolvendo seu trabalho muito mais em diálogo com a dança contemporânea e a performance do que com o teatro. Essa mudança vem de um desgaste que ile vinha sentido na sua própria relação com as palavras em cena, ou com o lugar que as palavras podem ocupar em cena. Era um desejo latente de que as palavras pudessem ser mais poesia do que imperativos. Esse livro e a performance que o acompanha são frutos desse questionamento e do desejo de lidar com a linguagem de uma forma queer.

Ana Clara Montenegro (ela/dela) é artista do corpo e professora.

Ela está envolvida com dança e movimento desde criança. Trabalhou em companhias de dança moderna e contemporânea em Belém e São Paulo antes de se mudar para a Alemanha, onde vive atualmente. Nos últimos cinco anos, vem desenvolvendo pesquisas solo como dançarina, assim como colaborando em projetos multidisciplinares como intérprete-criadora e preparadora corporal.

Em seu trabalho, Ana desenvolve a relação do espaço interno do corpo (das articulações, tecidos e sensações) com o espaço externo (das pessoas, das histórias, dos mitos, da arquitetura). Sua abordagem do trabalho de corpo é tanto artística quanto terapêutica e política, já que em seu trabalho o desenvolvimento pessoal e a criação estão em direta relação com o contexto social-histórico de quem se move.

Ana fez mestrado em Coreografia e Performance na Universidade de Gießen. Além de trabalhos artísticos, ela dá aulas regulares de Vinyasa Yoga e ministra workshops que abordam Yoga como uma ferramenta de autocuidado e de resistência micro-política.

elena rose light (ile/elu) é coreógrafe, performer e escritore do sul da Califórnia (Micqanaqa'n). Depois de estudar francês e história da arte na Universidade de Yale, elena se mudou para Nova Iorque e mergulhou na cena de dança experimental (downtown). Ile foi para a Alemanha participar do programa de mestrado em Coreografia e Performance na Universidade de Gießen e atualmente vive e trabalha em Berlim, onde desenvolve um projeto de aulas e performance chamado "trans practices" ou "práticas trans". Elena acredita no poder do movimento anti-racista, do movimento queer e do movimento somático não-binário para reorganizar sistemas de pensamento e códigos sociais.
